Born in Jerome, PA, he was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Uncle Bill had been an Air Transport Command pilot during World War II, and was Pacific area vice president for United Airlines, 1971 to 1976. He was also a member of the Honolulu Rotary and Waialae Country clubs and president, of Skall Club, Hawaii. He retired from United Airlines as vice president of the mid-Atlantic division in Washington, D.C., in 1980, after a 40-year career with the airline. He was a member of Duck United Methodist Church and Duck Woods Country Club. He was also a past member and chairman of the Dare County Airport Authority. Left with many memories are his wife, Ann P. Smith; two sons and two daughters; eight grandchildren; three brothers Richard, Robert and Ronald; and his sister, Marjorie Hosman.
