Carl was born on August 21, 1913 to Louis & Cora (Hardy) Hubert in Evart, Michigan. At the age of three, Carl moved with his family to Hecla, South Dakota. Shortly after the move, Carl's mother began raising Carl and his five siblings on her own. Carl received his schooling at Hecla, but at the age of thirteen the family found themselves in the midst of the Great Depression and Carl began working any available job to support his mother and his siblings. On January 16, 1934, Carl joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps Camp) near Rapid City, South Dakota. In 1938, while attending a masquerade ball, Carl became smitten with a beautiful girl that he danced with. That amazing girl turned out to be Marie Lucille Mentzer - the love of his life. Carl and Marie were married on August 21, 1940 in Webster, South Dakota - the day of Carl's 27th birthday. They began their life together in the Hecla, South Dakota area - farming and raising sheep. Soon, their family began to grow with the addition of their daughters, Sharon Kay and Darlys Rae. When the children were young, the family moved to the Mentzer family farm near Hecla where Carl and Marie lived until 1996. While raising his family and farming, Carl also drove a school bus for the Hecla School District from 1958-1968. Carl's family was first and foremost in his life. His strong faith was at the center of his family and his children were raised with his gentle guidance. Carl served as a deacon at the Britton Assembly of God church for several years and later attended the Houghton Ministerial Alliance Church. Once he moved to Coweta, Oklahoma he attended the First Baptist Church of Coweta. In 1958, Carl was blessed with his first grandchild. Many more were soon to follow. Stories abound amongst these children of their special times with Grandpa. Carl was a lover of nature, tending to his rose bushes and mowing the yard on his John Deere lawnmower. He was a handy man who could fix anything - or at least "tinker" with it. Carl's dry sense of humor will be most remembered by his family and friends. Carl and Marie loved to travel and were blessed to be fortunate enough to travel throughout the United States. In 1996, Carl and Marie moved to Coweta, Oklahoma to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law Chester and Darlys Woodward. They were the first residents at Carriage Crossing Retirement Center where Carl remained until his passing. As age began to creep up on Carl, his memory was as sharp as ever. Carl loved spending time with his family and friends reliving memories of the days gone by. During his final days, Carl's faith remained strong as ever, even during his final hours. His passing was peaceful, surrounded by his family, as he drifted off to heaven. Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Marie of 68 years and his two daughters, Sharon Kay and her husband, Albert Leo Murray and Darlys Rae and her husband, Ellis Chester Woodward. Carl's life was also shared with his five grandchildren, Cindy and Reed Litch, Leslie and Shari Murray, Shelly and Scott Freeman, Robin and Shawn Klahr, and Renda and Nathan Rapp. Sixteen great grandchildren also blessed Carl's life. Waiting to greet him in heaven are his daughter, Sharon and her husband, Leo, Carl's parents and his five siblings. Funeral services for Carl will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Coweta, Oklahoma. The Rev. David Jones will officiate the service with the Rev. Don Whitby assisting. Local arrangements are under the direction of Wright Funeral Home, 210 S. Broadway, Coweta, Okla. 74429, (918) 486-5515. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Detroit Township Cemetery in Hecla, South Dakota under the direction of Price Funeral Chapel in Britton, South Dakota.
