Henry John Gert Hinkeldey, son of Fredrick Hinkeldey and his wife MarieMargaret, -nee Sump, was born at Heidhusen. Hanover, Germany, on September, 29.1862. He was receiyed into membershlp with the Evangelical church by the Sacrament of Holy Baptism soon after his birth. In May of 1872 when the .departed was. between the ages of nine and ten 'years, he,. together with his parents; and the rest of the Hinkeldey family, cameto America, locatlng first, near Madlson, in Cook county, Illinois. There he continued his schooling in a Lutheran parochial school. After asojourn of about three years in Illinois, the Hinkeldey famlly removedto Crelghton,. Neb., however, after grasshoppers had destroyed the first harvest they left Nebraska for Page county, Iowa and located there, a.little north of the town of Clarinda. The. young Henry finished.his.education in the school of Emmanuel Lutheran church and was confirmed, March 26, 1877 in the Lutheron faithh by Pastor G. A..Lohr. Six years after his confirmation the Hlnkeldey, family left Page county for Buena Vista county, where they settled in Maple Valley township on a.farm now,occupied by the Martln Hinkeldey family. This farm became the Hinkeldeyhomestead. On June,.24,1898, the departed was married lo Mlss DorotheeHonsbruch. Thls union was blessed with, four sons, and three daughters. One; son died at birth and the other sons,'William Chrlstlan and Johnall survive, as do the daughters, Mrs. Marie Glienke, Mrs. ? Dreler. Besldes these chlldren of.his, own, Mr.Hlnkeldey gave a home also to Edgar Fahr, after, he had been orphaned. He lived in the famlly as one ofthe children from nlnth to fifteenth year. Mourning his death also are17 grandchldren and two sisters, Mrs. Margaretha Honsbruch, and Mrs. Nell Steeve He was preceded in death by an infant son and hls wife, Dorothea. She passed away, on.April 19 1938. The deceased enjoyed rugged health until about two years ago when he was attacked by an insidious ailment which caused him much discomfort and pain and whlch slowly but surely sapped away his strength. He passed away Monday morning; Feb. 11 atthe age 83 years, 4 months and 12 days.

Mr. Hlnkeldey was a faithful member of St John's Lutheran church of Hanover for all the years that he spent in thls community; always contending.for the faith. He .was a voting member of the congregation and tookan actlve Interest in all phases of church work. For a number of yearshe was treasurer and trustee of the.congregation. He attended word andsacrament regularly, unti! about two.years ago, when he became.physlcally too weak to do so. May God glve us the strength of many more such faithful members for our congregation..
