Christian was born at unter bauernschaft Nr. 26, Rodewald, electorate of Hannover. He married Anne Catharine Dorothee Duensing on 26 April 1811 at Rodewald. She was born 6 March 1786 at Rodewald and died in Rodewald on 25 September 1836. Christian immigrated to the United States in 1845 arriving in New York City on 7 October 1845 aboard the ship Emma.
He is buried in the unmarked cemetery located on the grounds of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Proviso Township, Hillside.
Christian's father was Johann CHRISTIAN Degener born between 1753 and 1760 at Rodewald and died after November 1829 in Rodewald. His mother was Anne Engel Bormann born 14 June 1756 in Eilvese, electorate of Hannover and died 11 March 1793 in Rodewald. They were married in June or July 1779 in Rodewald.
