His parents were Johan Diedrich 1840-1920 and Margaretha D. Rabe b. 1840-1919. both buried at Martin Luther Lutheran Cemetery.
Ernst married Martha Theresa Volker Sept. 9, 1897 at St. Johns(Stone)Lutheran Church, rural Auburn, Nemaha, NE. They had 2 children. Ella andHenry.

Ernst Dietrich Holthus, son of Johann D. and Margrethe (Rabe) Holthus,was born Feb. 17, 1874 in Nemaha County. In early infancy he was baptized and as a youth renewed his vow in confirmation in the Stone Church.
He attended school at the Bekmann country school and grew to manhood othe fam of his parents.
On Sept. 9, 1897, he was united in marriage with Martha Volker. Two children were born to this union.
Mr. Holthus was a charter member of the Martin Luther church. He servedon its council for nine years.
Mr. Holthus was in failing health for about a year and on Feb. 8 he wastaken to a hospital where he passed away on Feb. 11, at the age of 85years.
Three brothers and 6 sisters preceded him in death. There remain to mourn his death 2 children, one daughter, Mrs. Henry Moeller of Auburn; his son, Henry, of Auburn, and their spouses, three grandchildren, and 5great- grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Martin Luther Church Saturday, Feb. 13 conducted by Rev. F.K. Kumpf.
Pallbearers were Orville Bruggeman, Julius Rademacher, R.H. Beckmann, Carl Behrends, Norman Rademacher and Albert Fall.
Assisting with the flowers were Mrs. Laura Fass and Mrs. Lydia Fass. Music was burnished by the church choir with Mrs. Eldon Bohling, organist.
Interment was made in Martin Luther Church cemetery, with Caseys in charge of arrangements.
