John Adams Steinke of McCook, 79, was born April 10, 1920 at Holdrege,Neb., to John C. and Nettie Steinke who have preceded him in death. Hedied Wednesday (Dec. 1, 1999) at Hillcrest Nursing Home. John graduatedHoldrege High School in 1940 and was a member of the Nebraska NationalGuard. He was activated during World War II and spent time overseas. He was honorably discharged from the Army on Nov. 28, 1945. John workedas an electrician in 1938. He started to work for Northwester Bell Telephone Company in 1946 and retired in August, 1982. John married Ruby G.Brakhage in Los Angeles, Calif, on May 27, 1942, while in the military. To this union was born two sons, John R. (1944) in Portland, Ore, andJames E. (1947) in Holdrege, Neb. John was a memeber of Memorial United Methodist Church, McCook, The Telephone Pioneers of America, elks Club, VFW, American Legion and Red Willow Good Sam Camping Club. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; two sons and their wives, John and Kay of Waukee, Iowa, Jim and Karen of McCook; four granchildren, John D. Steinke and wife, Lori, of Indianold, Iowa; Kurt Steike of Waukee; Jennifer Robinson and husband, Brad of Hartscille, S.C.; Keri Steinke of Kearney; one great-grandson, Kyler Gartner of Hartsville; two brothers, Charles Steinke and wife, Phyliss, and Kenneth Steinke, all of Holdrege; and one sister, cleo Olsen and husband, LeRoy of Hampton. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, atCarpenter Breland Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church or McCook Pantry. Carpente Breland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
