He graduated from Trinity Lutheran School completing the 8th grade. Heattended one year of High School in Hanover and one year in California.He moved to San Diego, CA, where he worked for Consolidated Aircraft Company. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was trained as a bombardier. In 1945, he received an honorable discharge attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant. He flew 20 combat missions in the European Theatre of Operations. Elmer was awarded the European Theatre Ribbon with 2 Battle Stars; World War II Victory Medal; American TheatreRibbon; Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf clusters and the Army of OccupationMedal.

After his discharge he returned home and farmed until retiring in 1985.In 1988, he moved to Beatrice where he was a member of The American Legion and VFW.

Elmer was a lifelong member of Trinity.
