Heinrich Rennig Steinke was born August 15, 1853 in Mattfeldt, Hanover,Germany. There he was baptized, instructed in the Lutheran doctrines and confirmed by Pastor Bohme (Pastor Bohne in Eitzendorf).
His vocational training was that of a mason. At the age of 17 he came to America and settled at first near Peoria, Illinois where he made hishome with an uncle. Two years later he came to Lancaster County, Nebraska settling near Hickman. In 1877 he entered the estate of holy matrimony with Miss Dorothea Cruett, who followed him from Germany. This unionremained childless. However, they believed that a home without a childis not complete. They adopted a daughter, who later married Ed Fix andnow resides at Haxtun, Colorado.
On September 8, 1910 his wife was called by death. Two years he spent with his sister, Mrs. Bartels in Lincoln. On September 25, 1912 he married Mrs. Henrietta Fangmeier of Kramer. This union was blessed with onedaughter, who preceded her father into eternity shortly after her birth, April 25, 1914. From 1912 to 1915 he resided on a farm near Kramer. One year he lived in Kramer, moving to Crete, April 7, 1916.
Mr. Steinke has always been a faithful church member, holding not onlymembership in the churches at Hickman, Kramer, and Crete, but he also held the office of elder and trustee at the former places. He was a manof few words but who was always ready to act.
The last two years he showed signs of failing health. Thursday of lastweek his condition became serious. Medical aid was of no avail. He departed this life Monday night at 11:25, having attained the age of 79 years, 7 months, 25 days, being survived by his wife, two step-daughters,the foster daughter, eleven nieces, and eight nephews, and one brother-in-law.
Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. His pastor speaking on Psalm 31:6 in German and on John 19:30 in English. Burial will be made in the Kramer LutheranCemetery, where his body awaits the great Easter call.
