JOSEPH BRINKMAN RITES CONDUCTED HERE TUESDAY Death Of Aged Minster Man Follows Long Period Of Failing Health Celebration Of 50th Year At Brewery Received Wide Publicity In 1934 One of Minster's most widely-known men was laid to rest in St. Augustine's cemetery here Tuesday morning following services in the church, when the bier of Joseph Brinkman, aged 78 years and nine months, was lowered into its grave. Mr. Brinkman, affectionately known to practically everyone in this community, both young and old, was in his 60th year of employment at the Wooden Shoe Brewery company when death intervened early last Friday, to break this long-standing tie. Afflicted with failing health, which contrived to slow considerably his activities of many years, particularly in recent months, Mr. Brinkman became seriously ill ten days before the end, and was bedfast during this period. Death, attributed to complications, overtook him in the Miami Valley hospital at Dayton. Born in Glandorf, Germany on Feb 16, 1865, he was a son of the late Ferdinand and Wilhelmina Brinkman. He came to this county in 1883, at the behest of an uncle, Henry Brinkman, who had previously come to America and engaged in the shoe business. He located first at Newport, Ky., where he remained for one year. He then came here, became identified with the brewery, and retained connection with this firm down through the years to the time of his death. For the last 55 years he had served as brewmaster for the company. Completion of his 50th year with the firm was the occasion of a celebration honoring Mr. Brinkman, held on Aug 15, 1934, which received statewide newspaper and radio publicity. With the late August Schunck he made a trip back to Germany for a visit, in 1925. On Aug 31, 1887, Mr. Brinkman claimed Miss Anna Hinners as his bride, and the couple was privileged to spend nearly 55 years together. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1937. Five children were born to them. Surviving, with the widow, are two sons and daughters, namely Mrs. Rose Schmieder, Harry Brinkman, Mrs. Catherine Cozad and Walter Brinkman, all of Minster. A son, Frank, a former deputy state fire marshal, was killed in an automobile accident a number of years ago. There are seven grandchildren. Surviving sisters and brothers are Sister Mary Frumentia, Mrs. Agnes Pagenkemper, and Carl Brinkman, all living in Germany. A lifelong member of he Catholic church, Mr. Brinkman prior to death received the last sacrament of the church. He was a member of the St. Boniface society of the St. Augustine parish, and was an honorary member of the male choir. Fraternally he was associated with the Minster Eagles' lodge. He was a charter member of the local aerie. Rev. Theodore Koenn was celebrant of the solemn requiem high mass Tuesday morning. Rev. Alexander Linnemann assisted as deacon, and Rev. Robert Wuest as subdeacon.
