Mrs. H. Tomhave, early pioneer, aged 83, dies. Located here in 1873 - Walked to this city from Campbell.

Mrs. Henry Tomhave, 103 Summit Ave. East, this city, passed away Saturday at 7:45 p.m. after an illness of three weeks. While visiting at the farm in Fergus Falls Township on Sunday afternoon, July 23, Mrs. Tomhave met with an accident. Stepping out of the car, she fall, breaking her hip. She was taken to the hospital, and seemed to be getting along well for about two weeks. Monday evening of last week, however, she suffered a severe heart attack which left her, due to her great age, in a weak condition. Friday evening there was another attack, and on Saturday evening she departed this life. She attained the age of 83 years, two months and twelve days.

Mrs. Tomhave belongs to the pioneers of this neighborhood, having come here as early as 1873. With her husband, she traveled by train from Hay Creek, Minn., to Campbell, as there was no railroad in Fergus Falls then, and made the journey from Campbell to their farm in Fergus Falls on foot. She experienced all the hardships to which the early settlers were subject. She and her husband are the only remaining charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church, of this city, having held membership in this church for 60 years.

Mrs. Tomhave's maiden name was Anna Engel Bredehoeft. She was the daughter of Jacob Bredehoeft and Margaretha, nee Juest. She was born May 1, 1850, on the farm Adiek, near the village of Heeslingen in Hanover, Germany. There she was also by baptism received into the kingdom of God, and on March 24, 1864, confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Heeslingen by Pastor C. Sattler. With the family of her aunt, Mrs. L. Tomhave, she emigrated to this country in 1872, settling at Hay Creek, Minn. In this same year, she was united in marriage with Mr. Henry Tomhave, on Dec 26, the marriage ceremony being performed by Rev. Horst, one of the pioneer pastors of the Missouri Synod in this state.

Their marriage was blessed with five sons and five daughters, of whom one son and four daugthers have preceded her in death. For about 55 years, the couple lived on their homestead in Fergus Falls township. In 1928, they retired to this city, where since then they have resided on Summit Avenue East.

She is survived by her aged husband and five children: John Tomhave of Sandstone, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Bredehoeft of Aurdal; Carl, Claus and Henry L. Tomhave all of this city. She is also survived by one brother, Diederich Brededhoeft, 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mrs Tomhave was a pious and devout Christian woman, dearly beloved by her children and friends, and the Lord granted her a long and ... Rev. W. Friedrich officiating, and burial will be in the family lot in the church cemetery.
