Joseph C. Merkel, 85, 405 W. Grove Street, Dunmore, Pa., the father of a priest and two nuns, died Friday afternoon, January 20, 1961, at St. Mary's Hospital, Scranton, Pa., after a short illness. He was the father of Rev. Francis J. Merkel pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Duryea, former pastor of St. Juliana's, Rock Lake parish; Sister Mary Frances de Salles, a teacher at St. Boniface School, Wilkes-Barre and Sister Mary Aloysius, a teacher at West Catholic High School, Philadelphia. A native of Scranton, son of the late Charles and Genevieve Weber Merkel, he was employed at Pinell's Foundary, prior to his retirement in 1958. Mr. Merkel was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Church, its Holy Name Society and St. Mary's Parish Club, and was president of its St. Vincent de Paul Society. He attended St. Mary's Parochial SchooL He was also a member of Catholic Knights of St. George, Branch 45 and was a former officer in the organisation; the Laymen's Retreat League and the German-American Association. Additional survivors include his widow, the former Genevieve Weniger; four other daughters, Miss Elizabeth, Duryea; Mrs. Charles Kennedy, East Lansdowne; Mrs. James Rizzo and Mrs. Edward Kocsis, Dunmore; three other sons, John C, Dunmore; Joseph Lu, Scranton and Aloysius, Olyphant; three sisters, Sister Mary Patrizia, Danville; Sister Mary Borromeo, Wilkes-Barre, and Sister Mary Baptista, Chicago, IL, a brother William of Scranton. Interment was in St. Mary's parish cemetery.
