The Emporia Gazette, 27 Nov 1934, Tuesday BLAST INJURES TWO MEN. Explosion in Gasoline Stove Results in a Store Fire. Topeka, Nov. 27 (AP) -- Two men were burned, one severely, when an explosion in a gasoline stove splattered blazing fuel over a poultry supply store here today. The store was destroyed. Everett Zirkle, emloye(e) of the store, was burned severely about his hands, face and chest. He was taken to a hospital where attendants said he was expected to recover. A. E. Acord, proprietor of a garage and filling station in the same building who was using a telephone in the poultry store when the blast occurred, was burned slightly when the burning gasoline ignited his clothing, but he did not need hospital care. The explosion came when Zirkle was filling a water tank on the stove which served as a water heater. Both men extinguished the fire in their clothing by rolling on the ground. Damage to the building was estimated at $1000.
