Die Gründung des Frauenklosters St. Margarethen war im Jahr 918. Die Ansiedlung stand später unter dem Schutz der Schwarzenberger, die die Kastelburg und Schwarzenburg erbauten sowie die Ansiedlung im 13. Jahrhundert mit einer Stadtmauer befestigten.
