Catherine Virginia ZIRKLE

Catherine Virginia was born May 19, 1916. She was the eighth child for Papa and Mama. From what I heard and remember she was all right but sometime developed Bright's disease. Marvin was three years old. There is a picture of Marvin holding Catherine on his lap. It is a pretty picture. I remember Mama talking about this baby being so sick. We were Methodists and went to Quicksburg Methodist Church. But we lived very close to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, and we knew many of the members there beacuse they were our neighbors. We attended different programs there and in the summer we would go there to Bible School because we could walk by ourselves. The morning Catherine got really sick, Mama heard someone on the telephone, which was a party line, and asked them to call the doctor for her. This person was a neighbor and a good Lutheran and she said to Mama, "you're not going ot let her die without being baptized, are you?" So Mama called her minister and he said he would come right away. The minister baptized Catherine and he told Mama that Catherine would not have been lost if she had not been baptized. Catherine died October 29, 1917, and was buried in the Zirkle Cemetery near the New Market bridge. She never had a tombstone so we never knew where she was buried. After Papa died, we had some of what we thought could be the remains of Catherine, moved to Grace Cemetery and gave her a tombstone with her name on it. -- Audrey Nelle Zirkle Wine Gayhart, "A Farm Girl from Quicksburg, Virginia," 2003.
