Trained as a machinist, he worked for two years in a sugar mill in Hawaii. In later years he owned an automobile machine shop on NE 6th and Multnomah in Portland, OR. He was also an accomplished amateur photographer, his photos of early Hawaii are held by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, and the Kauai Museum in Lauhi, Kauai.
