Virginia Hughes, 70, Stanhope, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 at the University Hospital at Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Stanhope with Rev. Joseph Lambert officiating. Burial will be in the Neese Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral Home in Webster City, and one hour prior to services at the church. Virginia Mae Plager, daughter of Wilbur and Bessie Wheelock Plager, was born Dec. 7, 1929 in Grundy County. She was a graduate of Blairsburg High School and attended Webster City Junior College, then attended extension classes through Iowa State University. On July 17, 1949, she married William Highes at the Blairsburg Congregational Church. The couple resided and farmed north of Stanhope. She was along time resident of the Blairsburg and Stanhope communities in Hamilton County. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William, Stanhope; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Hughes, of Forest City, Vicki Hughes, also of Forest City; Craig and Denise Hughes, Webster City; James and Karlene Hughes, Boone; daughter, Holly Hughes, Marion, Grandchildren, Roger William Hughes II, Megan Hughes, Chelsey Madsen, Matthew, Jeffrey, and Elizabeth Whiton, brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Saundra Plager of Rochester, Minn., sister, Charlotte Withers of LaFayette, Ind. She was preceded in death by her father. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was past president of the Ladies Aide Society of the church, past member of the State Platform Committee, Republican Party, served as head of credentials for the district and state Republican convention, post officer of the Order of Eastern Star, Webster City. She was involved as a 4-H Club leader for several years in Blairsburg, earned a Master Canner and Gardener degree throught the Iowa State Extension program, was a member and past president of Webster City Town and Country Garden Club. She led a bible study at the Stratford Nursing Home and was an active volunteer in many other programs throughout Hamilton County. Q: Find a Grave
