Dear Mary,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Nice to see my old message board posting has attracted some interest.

I am very interested in your Antique Store discovery!

Coincidently, my father lives in Bothell and my sister lives near Everett.

My sister and I are the main researchers for our family tree.

I'm in the United States Air Force stationed in Germany nearKaiserslautern, and have been researching my family tree extensivelysince my arrival here in Feb 2001.

My Gyger research has been really slow, since most of the relatives Iknow of are deceased.

Hopefully some of the names in your box of goodies match the folks listedon my family tree web site.

The items most certainly have be of my Gyger family. Maybe some of thefirst names will match with the names listed on my web site?

Please review my online family tree at:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Roderick-A-Schwald/

Look through the web site, and find the GYGER's listed at:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Roderick-A-Schwald/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-Index.html

lude your home phone number. If it turns outthese items are of my family, then we would reimburse you for the cost ofthe items, for they are invaluable to us.

Thanks again for your email, you have really brightened my day!

Roderick

My Great Grandmother's Maiden name was Elizabeth Gyger, she was commonlycalled Lizzie. She was born near Bern or Berne, Switzerland 16 April1868. Her Mother's name was Katherine Leuthold and her Father was DavidGyger. Children were Gottfried, Lena, Elizabeth, Albert, Emil and Ida.They came to the US around March 1870. The family lived for a short timenear Rome, NY with relatives. Then moved to Ohio for a short time then onto Seattle at around 1886-1887.

Elizabeth met and married my Great Grandpa named Frederick or FrederichSchwald in Seattle at around 1897 or 1898. They had 6 children; Lester(my Grandpa), Bernice, Benjamin, Winney, Paul, and Kenneth.

Any information would be appreciated.

Mary,

Thanks for the reply.

Are you related to the Gygers?

I wish I knew who the person was that sold the stuff to the shop.

They might not even know how far we have traced our roots or know thatthere

is a renewed interest.

Heck, the person might not know that there are folks who are looking for

living relatives!

My family is very big, and they have spread out over the years.

Well, whenever you get a chance to go through the items just drop me aline

or two.

I can call you from Germany when you are ready to talk.

I am looking forward to reading the documents too, for I speak German.

Thanks again,

Roderick

Dear Roderick,

I too had posted a message on this message board about 2 years ago andabout

3 months ago I received two emails from two different people telling me

about

this line of my family tree. It was a huge surprise.

This box was bought with the full intent of being distributed to the local

Historical Societies and museums. But this would only be for the itemsthat

relate to the towns' histories. The old photos, birth records and items

that pertain personally to your family should go to the closest familymember.

The person that sold these items did so with the phrase "Nobody cares." I

didn't believe that for a minute, but I believe she believed that all the

people closest to her, didn't care. Many people in families do not getthe

genealogy bug.

Well, I have to get home. I am at the end of the school year and am a

teacher. So this is a TREMENDOUSLY busy time for me during the next three

weeks. I also go back into the hospital for major surgery on July 10th.I

will try to send you as much information as I can before then. I willneed

to get some time to sort through this box.

Thank you,

Mary

Mary,

Thanks for your reply.

You just made me believe that these items MUST be of my family!

Katherine Leuthold is my Great Great Grandmother!

Her daughter Elizabeth/Elisabeth is my Great Grandmother.

The Gygers, pronounced Geeger in Germany and Switzerland, came to the USA

and stayed in Ohio for awhile.

The Americans and Swiss generations later on changed the spellings to

Geiger.

My sister Janet who lives in Everett has more information on my Gyger

ancestors.

I wish I knew who your student is that is related to the Gygers, because

they are surely a blood relative of mine.

You may pass them my email address if you want.

Thanks for the update.

Dear Roderick,

I too speak "a little" German, but these papers are in swedish. I canmake

out some of it, but most of it is also in handwriting and not very well

written.

You can of course look at pictures on the net, right? Maybe I can do what

my natural family did and start a portion of a site on Ancestry.com whereall

the relatives can see many of the things in the box onvce they arescanned.

Having one of my students be directly related to a person in the box was

thrilling. I will be letting them have the original birth certificate to

Katherine Luthold. It is this student's Great Grandmother. They saidthat

many of the Gyger's are alive and well and living in Ohio. This familywill

be getting in touch with them and seeing how close they are related to the

people in the box.

No, I am not related to the people in the box. I suspect it was Elizabeth

Geiger that sold the box. Many of the recent diaries are hers. They are

filled with so many historical facts about the towns around here.

I think the best way to share it all is to see how to start that internet

site at Ancestry.com, scan the items and put them there for everyone to

share. It will be hard to "fairly" distribute this box, but breaking it

apart seems wrong too. The museums in the area wanted the box whole, asis,

because of all the riches in it and the way it all relates to each other.

They would be the best people to preserve and protect it. But I willhave a

lot of time to think with this surgery coming up. I will definitely give

the

birth certificates and other personal papers to the closest relatives.

Well, I have to get back to work now. I will let you know when I eitherget

items up on the web or ready to send you items to wherever you want them

sent.

Respectfully,

Mary

Subject: Gyger Artifacts

Hello Mary:

I am Roderick's sister, Janet. Rod has forwarded all your emails to me.I live in Everett, WA.

Your set of Gyger family records is the second set of Gyger records wehave discovered which have been sold to Antique stores in WesternWashington state.

The first set was discovered in an antique store in Bellevue in October2001. I was able to contact a woman who purchased these family photosand she sold them to me. She had purchased the photos with the hopes ofhelping them "find their way home".

These were indeed photos of our family, David Gyger(born: 24 Apr 1840)and Catherine Leuthold Gyger(born: 1 Oct 1843) and family members. Manyof the family photos were copies which I already had in my greatgrandmother Lizzie Gyger Schwald's original photo album from the 1800's.

The antique store owner related that the woman who originally sold theseitems to the Bellevue store said she had a terminal disease. She wasselling all her household items to purchase a motor home and tour the US.

Rod and I have been searching for the family records which came with thefamily from Switzerland.

In 1976, these family records were in the possession of David andCatherine Leuthold Gyger's granddaughter, Edna Gyger Dean, daughter ofEmil Gyger, and niece to my great grandmother Lizzie Gyger Schwald.

Edna was 81 years old at that time and lived in Seattle. She was thefamily historian. Edna passed away (1990), and the whereabouts of thefamily records were lost.

It is my belief that Edna passed these records down to her daughter, andthat the daughter is the one who sold these records to antique stores. Icame to this conclusion because many of the photo's I rescued from theBellevue store were labeled, and all labeling referenced to "mother'sfather", or my uncle....etc.

My father and his sister, both living, ages 75 and 76, are greatgrandchildren to David Gyger dob: 1840 and Catherine Leuthold dob: 1843.

They live in Bothell, WA and Everett, WA. They were raised by theirgrandmother Lizzie Gyger Schwald. To my knowledge, they are the oldestliving descendents of David Gyger and Catherine Leuthold.

The family history, briefly:

**Sara Von Bergen was born to Jacob Von Bergen and Barbara Naegelin on 14Nov 1802 in Meiringen,Bern,Switzerland.

**Sara Von Bergen married Christian Leuthold on 10 March 1838 in Gadman,Berne, Switzerland.

**Catherine (Katharina) Leuthold was born to Christian Leuthold and SaraVon Bergen on 1 Oct 1843 in Gadman, Berne, Switzerland.

**David Gyger was born to Susanna Gyger on 24 April 1840 in Daerstetten,Bern, Switzerland.

David Gyger and Catherine (Katharina) Leuthold were married in abt. 1863in Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

They had 3 Children in Bern, Switzerland, Godfrey b: 1864, Lena b: 1866,and Elisa "Lizzie" b: 1868(my great grandmother).

They immigrated to New York in March 1870 and lived near Lee Center, nearRome, NY.; where relatives lived. Another child, Emil b: 1870, was bornin New York a few months later.

The family moved to Ohio approximately a year later in 1871, where JohnAlbert b: 1872, Ida b: 1875, Minnie b: 1876, and Alfred b: 1882 were born.

Photo taken Ohio 1883

The family moved to Seattle, WA in 1886-1887.

Catherine Leuthold died in Seattle between 1890-1891.

The majority of the Gyger family moved to Bellingham, WA in 1893. Mygreat grandmother Lizzie stayed in Seattle, where she met and married mygreat grandfather, Fred Schwald in 1898.

David Gyger died in Bellingham, WA, about 1913.

If you are indeed in possession of our missing family records, yourstudent must be age 70 or older, or the student could not possibly be thegreat grandson of OUR Catherine Leuthold dob: 1843.

Irregardless, I would be very interested in visiting with you and sharingthe contents of my Great Grandmother Lizzie's photo album to comparepictures and notes

My father and his sister are likewise, interested in knowing if you havethe family records of their Great Grandparents David and CatherineLeuthold Gyger.

Hoping to hear from you soon,
