Friedrich war der erste nominelle Graf von Saarbrücken. Er erbte die Herrschaft im Jahr 1105 von seinem Vater Siegbert dem örtlichen Gaugrafen. Verheiratet war er mit Gisela, die ihre Besitztümer rund um das Kloster Hornbach mit einbrachte. Friedrich wird 1118 erstmals als Graf von Saarbrücken genannt. Die Grafen von Saarbrücken waren Vasallen der Bischöfe von Metz.
