Notes for this person

John Gentry was born near Danville, Indiana in April, 1847, the son of Joshua Gentry and Elizabeth Jane Foley. By the time he was 3, the family had migrated to Madison County Iowa - which is where John grewup. On March 18, 1869, he married Mary Ann Simmons in Warren County, Iowa, and they lived there for several years. Their only child, a daughter named Ethyella Mae, was born there. By 1880 they were living in Fremont County Colorado - but later moved to near Juliatta in Latah County Idaho along with the family of John's brother James. They were listed there in the 1900 census. Mary Ann died there on March 18, 1901 and is buried in the Genesee City Cemetery. Shortly after that, both John and the family of his brother James returned to Madison County, Iowa. On August 25, 1904, in Des Moines, Iowa, John remarried to Mary A. Schnellbacher/Koch - who had also grown up in Madison County and possibly was an acquaintance of John in their youth. They then moved back to the northwest - to Milton Oregon where they were primarily fruit growers. Sometime before 1920 they were divorced and, in 1920, Mary was living with the family of her daughter in Colton, California, and John with the family of his daughter in Walla Walla, Washington - just a fewmiles north of Milton, OR. Ethyella had married and remained in thatarea when John had earlier lived in Idaho. John died in Walla Walla in July, 1920.
