1745 übernahm Johann Philipp Bethmann von seinem Onkel Johann Adami dessen Handelsgeschäft, das er 1748, mit seinem Bruder Simon Moritz Bethmann als Teilhaber, in die Firma "Gebrüder Bethmann" umbenannte. Zunächst wurden noch Kolonialwaren, Textilien und Farben gehandelt, doch das Geldgeschäft geriet immer mehr in den Vordergrund.
