Edmond Freeman Birth: 25 Jul 1596 - Pulborough, West Sussex, England Death: 21 Jun 1682 (aged 85) - Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA Burial: Saddle and Pillion Cemetery, Sagamore, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, USA Memorial ID: 6127309 The date often given and seen on the grave as a birth date is probably in error. There has been located a baptism record for him in the Parish church records at Pulborough Church in West Sussex, England for 25 July 1596. Most babies were baptized within a few days or weeks of their birth; so 1590 is probably an error. Robert Charles Anderson gives in his "The Great Migration", Vol. 2, page 577, the date of this baptism. The death date is also deceptive. He wrote his will on 21 June 1682 and it was probated on 2 Nov 1682; so he died between those 2 dates. He married 2 times. First in Cowfold, Sussex, England to Bennett Hodsoll or sometimes spelled Hodsell, on 16 June 1617. The children of this marriage are: 1) Alice 1619-1651 she married William Paddy in 1639. 2) Edmond, Jr. 1620-1704 3) Bennett 1622-abt1633 (son)He died between 28 Nov 1633 & 13 January 1634. There are depositions on those dates. 4) Elizabeth 1624-aft 1644 when she married John Ellis. 5) John 1627-1719 6) Nathaniel 1629-1629 Second in Shipley, Sussex, England to Elizabeth whose maiden name is unknown on 10 Aug 1632. (There is no proof at all that her maiden name was Rayner.) The child of this marriage is: 1) Mary 1636-aft 1653 when she married Edward Perry. He sailed with his 2nd wife Elizabeth, 4 children from his first marriage on the "Abigail" which left Plymouth, Devon, England on 4 June 1635. There was an outbreak of smallpox on this ship during thecrossing. The family arrived in Boston Harbor on 8 Oct 1635. They first settled in Saugus which is now called Lynn, MA. Admitted freeman at Plymouth, MA on 23 January 1637. He was the assistant to Gov. Bradford 1640-1647 and the principle founder of the town of Sandwich, Barnstable, MA in 1637. | |

See also BIOS (1) [CONTRIBUTED ON 5 January 2015 by LaRita Call Evans1] Both Edmond and his brother William, with their respective wives, were beneficiaries in the wills of their father-in-law John Hodsoll and his son of the same name. The wives were co-heirs to their brother. In January 1633/34, Edmond, on behalf of himself and his five living children, brought suit in Chancery Court against his brother William and others in regard to the disposition of certain lands and tenements formerly belonging to John Hodsoll, his father-in-law. The depositions taken give evidence of the dates of baptism of four of the six children at Billingshurst, and that he owned lands in both Pulborough and Billingshurst. He moved to Billingshurst, about 6 miles NE of Pulborough about 1619. By September 1627 he had returned to Pulborough, where his youngest child was baptized and buried.
