Began use of name Belknap sometime between December 06,1620,andMarch02,1624. ( only one of this generation to do so beforedeathofBennet).Church register North Weald spells nameBeltrap--afrequentmisspellingof Belknap at that time. Disposition that hesigned by(mark)at NorthWeald, Essex in 1626 as Abraham Belknapp.Abraham's uncleJosias,signedhis 'will' as Belknappe, and named BennetasBenedictBelknappe,--thusforcing Bennet to swear on oath in court thathewasBenedict Belknappe,February 06, 1599. Bennet's 'will' April14,1623,named him as BennetBeltoft. Bennet's wife and children buriedhimasBennet Belknap.Immediately after Bennet's death in 1624, hiswife,andall his childrenused name Belknap. Beltoft was never again usedbyanymember of thisfamily. Abraham's occupation in England isunknown,butapparentlylandless. Thought to have been disinherited inhisfather's'will', suchis not the case. He was bequeathed Bennet'sonlysizeable sumof money,twenty (20) shillings, a goodly sum at thattime.This waslikely due tothe pre Norman conquest practice, or as theNormanscalledit, (boroughEnglish), whereas the youngest son was theinheritor oftheestate.Abraham was alloted forty (40) acres of landatLynn,Massachusetts, in1637, Occupation, Farmer. Abraham diedatLynn,Massachusetts, inSeptember, 1643. Net Value of hisestate,fortyseven--(47) pounds.
