Miriam was 9 months old when her mother passed away. Her grandparents, McClain and Mary E. Swartz Miller, raised her on a farm at Hilltown, also kept store. Later they moved to Cashtown and her father Ernest remarried to Sue O'Brien who lived next to them on the Arendtsville and Cashtown Road.
