Herman F. Borneman, 88, a lifelong resident of Elkhart, Ind., and a prominent business and civic leader, died Wednesday evening, February 20, 1969, at his home at 1540 Lawndale, Elkhart, after an illness of five years. Mr. Borneman was born here Feb. 12, 1881, the son of the late Herman Borneman Sr. and Katherine Wagner Borneman. On Nov. 19, 1913, he married the former Lillian R. Ross in Chicago. She died Nov. 24, 1964. Surviving are two sons, H. Ross and Harold A. Borneman, and six grandchildren. Mr. Borneman's father was co-founder of the Borneman & Doll Hardware Store in 1877. It became Borneman & Sons Hardware in the late 1800s. He operated it with other members of the family until his retirement in 1958. Mr. Borneman attended Elkhart schools and graduated from the Indianapolis Business College. Was Bank Director - He was a founder and charter member of the Elkhart City Club and the Christiana Country Club and also was a founder and first treasurer of the local Rotary Club in 1917. A director of the First National Bank for approximately 40 years, he was currently a director emeritus of that institution. Mr. Borneman was a charter member of the Bologna Club, was currently a director of the Elkhart Products Corp. and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. A 50-year member of the National Hardware Association, he also held memberships in the Elks and Eagles Lodges, the Century Club, Tyrian Masonic Lodge and Elcona Country Club and was a member of the former South Bend Knife and Fork Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elkhart County Rehabilitation Center. Service On Monday - Friends may be received at the Hartzler-Gutermuth Funeral Home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. The burial office will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church where he was a member. The officiant will be the Rev. Carl Richardson, pastor. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wilbur Wright, Walter E. Lerner, Wilbur Templin, Jr., Tom Holt, Jr., Durward Drake and John Best. Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Beardsley, A. C. Arbogast, Coryn Wright, Otis Beers, Ed C. Keene, Tom Keene, Wilbur Templin, Sr., Lincoln Sollitt, Wilbur Schult, Dr. Walter Compton, and George Anderson. Elkhart Truth, Elkhart, Indiana
