WALCOTT MAN DIES INFIRE AT HOUSE
An 89 year-old Walcott man died early Thursday in a fire that damag
ed a portion of his home.
Henry Helkenn, 247 N. Downey St., was pronounced dead at the scene by D
r. R. M. Perkins, Scott County medical examiner.
Perkins attributed the death of Mr. Helkenn, who would have be
en 90 in April, tosmoke and heat from the blaze.
Walcott volunteer firemen said they were called to the Helkenn home abo
ut 2 a.m. by a neighbor, Mrs. Gayle Engler.
Fire officials said several men tried to enter the house in attemp
ts to save Mr. Helkenn, but were driven back by the smoke and heat.
Firemen said the blaze was confined to a six-foot square area in the we
st portion of the house. They said the flames apparently originated in t
he basement and worked their way upward through the kitchen area and to t
he roof of the structure.
Mr. Helkenn hadbeen sleeping in a bedroom in the east portion of the h
ouse where he had lived alone, firemen said.
Firemen said they had not determined a cause for the blaze, which appar
ently began before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Fire fighters said akitchen clock had melted to the wall with the han
ds in the position of five minutes before 11.
Services for Mr. Helkenn will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in RungeChapel. B
urial will be in Walcott Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the mortuary.
Mr. Helkenn was born in Long Grove. He married Minnie Meier Feb. 24, 1
904, near Eldridge.
The couple farmed near Walcott and Eldridge for 55 years, until retiri
ng and moving to Walcott 10 years ago. Mrs.Helkenn died in 1967.
Mr. Helkenn is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Erma) Lane, Wilt
on Junction; a son, Carl, Walcott; five grandchildren and seven great-gran
dchildren.
