THURSTON Died Thuesday, Feb 8, 1966 at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. A. M. Waldrop of Goochland, Va., Walter K. Thurston. Besides Mrs. Waldrop, he was survived by Mrs. Thelma Thurston [ed. This was an error in the obituary. Thelma never married.], Mrs. Mildred Chomicz, Mrs. Alice Johnson, Mrs. Ann Monroe; one son, W. Carle Thurston: two brothers, R. H. and M. N. Thurston: two sisters, Mrs. C. C. Cosby, Miss Mary Thurston. 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Third and Marshall, where services will be held Thursday at 4 P.M. Interment in Riverview. The deceased was a member of Fitzhugh Lee Camp No. 1, Spanish War Veterans. | |

1903 Mon, June 1st - "Thurston" began driving the engine from today. Page 8 - Wednesday the 20th - Board of fire commissioners met in the quarters of this company at 8 P.M. Transferred Chaise to #7. Sent Thurston of No 1 Truck here to take Chaise's place. Elected Mr. Clarke in place of "Wade" resigned. The change in "Chaise" & Thurston to take effect 12 pm Thursday. Page 8 - Thursday the 21st - Chief visited house this a.m. found fault with me about doing work such as cleaning up behind the horses giving them water etc. Told me I was not put here to do work...W.K. Thurston & L. N. Clarke reported here at 12 pm. Went in duty. Page 9 - Friday the 22d - Engine & horses taken out 5 a.m. Made a change with Charlie horse placed in the middle. Mr. "Thurston" says they drive better. Page 9 - Saturday the 23d - No. 6 Back from N.Y. "Thurston" sent to R.F.&P. depot to help get-off No. 6. Extra pop for engine sent by LaFrance Co. Page 9 - Thursday the 5th - Thurston changed to Sunday. Thurston on the floor. Bay horse sent back here in taking him out the horse kicked Mr. Weimer on the leg and hurt him right badly had to send for the doctor. He ordered Mr. Weimer on light duty. Page 9 - Friday the 6th - Thurston kicked leg broke. The Bay horse kicked Thurston on the leg and broke. Chief had him sent away. Page 45 - Monday the 9th - Mr. Kepler lost his watch in the water closet. Garthright pulled up the closet and found the watch. Page 45 - Tuesday the 10th - Steinberg was knocked senseless by a piece of wood falling on his head while taking hose out of the tower. Page 91 - Monday the 31st - Chief visited house this evening told me he had been informed that Mr. Thurston whips his horses more than was necessary. Informed him that I did not think so. Told me to stop the whipping of the horses by the drivers. Informed Mr. Thurston who did not appear to like it. Mr. Clarke and Louis [Robert?] who had been drinking did a lot of loud talking in the vestibule of the engine house for some time after 11 P.M. Still continued this until after 12:05 A.M. I dressed and went down stairs and informed Mr. Clarke that this must be stopped as it was after 12 O'C. Mr. Clarke paid no attention to this until 12:15 A.M. when he came up stairs. 1903 Mon, June 1st - "Thurston" began driving the engine from today. 1903 23rd June - Military called out today. 1903 25th June - 9 people shot in riot last night - entire military force of Virginia called to the city. [This was during the Street Car/labor riots. - pj] Page 135 - February 1904 - Wednesday the 3rd - Thurston on furlough 5 days to be married. Page 219 - Entry for Thursday, 16 Mar 1905: "Thurston called out of city on act of illness of his father 10 a.m." [Walter Thurston's father, Nathaniel Thurston, died the next day of "heart trouble". Walter was back at work at the fire house by 19 Mar 1905. - pj] Page 109 - Mr. Weimer was detailed for floor duty to day 7 A.M. Neglected to attend to his duty. Found him standing on 3rd & Broad St at 10:15 as he had been absent from the house for sometime I informed him that he was on the floor to-day. He went to the house at once. On my return to the engine house, he found fault with being put on floor duty, as he claimed that his day had been on the 28th. Told him that was his day off and therefore he was not on duty and had not been on floor duty since the 22nd. Informed me that I had not been working that way heretofore. Informed him that a change at times as was necessary and as captain of the company I intended to suit myself in that matter. Informed me that I did not know what I was doing and did not know how to do it. I informed him to stop that kind of talking or he would be cited before the board. He said take me before the board, take me before the board & some other remarks. Requested him to keep quiet which I think he did until I went upstairs to attend to my other duties. I informed Chief Pueler about this trouble and he ordered me to prefer charges against Mr. Weimer for insubordination, which I did and he was ordered to appear before the board on November the 2nd at 8 P.M. Mr Thurston was present and heard the converstaion and is cited to appear as a witness. Page 252 - Furlough - Thurston - July 6 to 16th. Page 250 (2nd copy on reel) - Sun, Jul 22, 1906 Thurston on furlough for 10 days till Aug 1st. | |

Waldrop of Goochland, Miss Thelma Thurston, Mrs Walter J. Chomicz, Mrs. H.S. Johnson and Mrs. Fred Monroe, all of Richmond; a son W. Carle Thurston of Richmond; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home: with burial in Riverview Cemetery. | |
